Tommaso Caloiero was born on May 6th, 1977 in Catanzaro, Italy.

He graduated in Civil Engineer (specialization in Hydraulic) from the University of Calabria, Italy in 2002 (Dissertation title: Modelling of “fiumare” riverbeds in Calabria).

In 2005 he received a Second level Master Degree in Mathematical Modelling of Hydrogeological Disaster from the same University.

In 2009 he received a Ph.D. in Hydraulic Engineering from the Politecnico of Milan (PhD Thesis title: Analysis of long rainfall series in the Calabria region: trend and correlation with large scale oscillation indexes).

Since June 2011, he has been a researcher at the National Research Council - Institute for Agricultural and Forest Systems in the Mediterranean (CNR-ISAFOM), Rende (CS), Italy.

In July 2017 he received the National Scientific Habilitation to be Associate Professor for the Scientific Discipline 08/A01: Hydraulics, hydrology, hydraulic and marine constructions.

Since April 2018, he has been a Member of the Scientific Board of the PhD in Sciences and Environmental Engineering, Construction and Energy at the University of Calabria.

He worked for different regional institutions in the Calabria region (Southern Italy) such as the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA), Civil Protection and Basin Authority. He has been a consultant for the Institute for the Industrial Promotion (IPI). He has collaborated as a scientific consultant with the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI), the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (ISAC) and the Institute for Agricultural and Forest Systems in the Mediterranean (ISAFOM) of the National Research Council (CNR), with the Department of Soil Defence of the University of Calabria and with the Department of Environmental, Hydraulic, Infrastructures and Surveying Engineering (DIIAR) of the Politecnico of Milan.



Hydrology, Climatology, Climate Change, Natural Hazards, Hydrologic and Water Resource Modelling and Simulation, Geographic Information Systems, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Ecological Engineering, Land Use Chance and Forest Ecology.



He is currently AI of the projects “ERA-NET COFUND WATERWORKS 2015 - Innovative Options for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Mediterranean (INNOMED)” and “PRIN 2015 - Reconciling precipitation with runoff: the role of understated measurement biases in the modeling of hydrological processes”. Besides, Dr. Tommaso Caloiero is collaborating at the project “ERA-NET COFUND ERA4CS - Integrated approach for the development across Europe of user oriented climate indicators for GFCS high-priority sectors: agriculture, disaster risk reduction, energy, health, water and tourism (INDECIS)”. Moreover, he has collaborated at the projects “PON03_00024_1 Public-Private Laboratory for Innovative Technologies with High Environmental Sustainability in the Forest-Wood-Energy Processing Chain - Ambi.Tec.Fil.Legno – ALForLab” as coordinator of the Deliverable 1.1.31 “Continuous monitoring of plant transpiration soil evapotranspiration”, “ManFor CBD 2010-2015 Life Environment Project LIFE09 ENV/IT/000078. Managing forests for multiple purposes: carbon, biodiversity and socio-economic wellbeing”, “PONa3_00363 - Infrastructure AMICA - Infrastructure of High Technology for Integrated Climate and Environmental Monitoring” and “PON01_02061  Project for a complete advanced energy system, based on the mass culture of transparent microalgae for the production of renewable energy and other products, in terms of competitiveness and environmental sustainability”.



More than 100 scientific papers published on national and international academic journals and as contributions to national and international conferences proceedings.



He has been a guest editor for the following Special Issues:

“Damaging Hydrogeological Events” of Water;

“The Role of Water-Rock Interaction Processes in Soil Formation: Geochemical, Mineralogical, Geomorphological, and Engineering-Geological Aspects” of Geofluids;

“Hydrological Hazard: Analysis and Prevention” of Geosciences.



He has been a peer-reviewer for more than 30 different journal.
